Mercedes Yvette Scelba-Shorte was a contestant on Cycle 2 of ANTM in 2004, where she was declared the runner-up.

Early Life[]

Shorte was studying at California State University, Northridge before auditioning for Top Model. She also appeared in the MTV reality show Fear in 2000.

ANTM[]

Mercedes was best known on the show for her struggles with Lupus. At first she hid this from the other girls until an interview challenge in episode five where she revealed the Lupus diagnosis to Janice Dickinson, who also told the other girls, to their shock.

She was constantly criticized by the judges that her look was too commercial. This was amplified when the girls went to Milan, and she was in the bottom two in episodes eight and ten, but saved over Camille and April. She received best photo in the finale because she finally looked edgy in her beauty shot, but soon lost to Yoanna because the judges thought the latter was more versatile.
